In a striking development within the tech industry, Meta is ramping up its efforts in the artificial intelligence sector with an impressive hiring strategy. Among the latest recruits is Matt Deitke, a 24-year-old AI expert who has captured attention not only for his talent but also for the staggering compensation package he received. Deitke, freshly emerged from a computer science Ph.D. program at the University of Washington, has joined the newly established Superintelligence Labs at Meta. Initially, he was offered a generous $125 million in stock and cash over four years. However, after a personal meeting with CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the deal was sweetened to an extraordinary $250 million, with as much as $100 million available in the first year alone. This remarkable hiring move reflects Meta's aggressive strategy to compete in the AI landscape. The company is on a quest to develop 'superintelligence,' a concept that envisions AI surpassing human capabilities. In pursuit of this goal, Zuckerberg has reportedly engaged with various AI talents, some of whom have turned down offers as high as $1.5 billion. Before joining Meta, Deitke worked at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle, where he led the creation of Molmo, an innovative AI chatbot capable of processing images, sounds, and text. Additionally, he co-founded an AI startup called Vercept, which focuses on developing AI agents and has already secured $16.5 million in funding from notable investors, including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. As Meta prepares to significantly increase its capital expenditures—from $30 billion to $72 billion by 2025—it's clear that the company is making bold moves to establish itself as a leader in the AI sector.
