Meta removes over 6 lakh accounts, including 1.35 lakh on Instagram. Here's why

In a decisive action aimed at combating predatory behavior, Meta has eliminated more than 600,000 accounts across Instagram and Facebook. This extensive crackdown focuses on accounts that engage in exploitative actions towards minors, particularly targeting those that post sexualized comments or solicit explicit images from young users. Among the accounts removed, approximately 135,000 were flagged for inappropriate content directly aimed at children or accounts run by minors. Additionally, around 500,000 accounts faced removal for engaging in improper interactions or being linked to previously identified offenders. Meta is collaborating with other technology platforms through the Tech Coalition’s Lantern program to share this data and enhance cross-platform safety measures. This bold initiative comes amid increasing criticism regarding how social media platforms safeguard young users. Meta is under heightened scrutiny, facing legal challenges concerning the mental health impacts of its services on children and adolescents. To further protect teenagers, Meta has implemented new safety updates designed to minimize unwanted contact. These updates introduce clearer messaging about who is attempting to communicate with them and provide one-tap options to block or report suspicious accounts. Teen users now receive “Safety Notice” alerts when they receive messages from unknown individuals, encouraging caution before responding. Recent internal data indicates that these alerts have led to a significant increase in protective actions, with teens blocking over one million accounts and submitting an equal number of reports in just one month. Another innovative feature is the “Location Notice,” which informs users if their conversation partner may be based in a different country—a tactic often exploited by scammers to mask their identity. Meta is also leveraging artificial intelligence to improve age verification processes, automatically converting flagged accounts into teen profiles that come with enhanced safety settings. These profiles are set to private by default, restricting who can send direct messages. Furthermore, a nudity protection tool, which blurs explicit images, is enabled for all teen accounts, with 99% of users keeping this feature active. The updated safety protocols also extend to adult-managed accounts featuring children, such as those operated by parents or talent agents. These accounts will have stricter messaging restrictions and improved filters to block harmful comments. Adults previously flagged for inappropriate behavior will face limitations in their ability to interact with these accounts. As scrutiny from public and regulatory bodies intensifies, Meta's recent actions reflect a broader commitment to enhancing user safety, especially for younger audiences. With all new teen accounts set to private by default since 2024, the company continues to evolve its strategies to address issues of impersonation and spam, having removed around 10 million fake accounts this year alone. While it remains to be seen whether these measures will fully resolve child safety concerns, they signal a more proactive stance from Meta amidst growing pressure from lawmakers and discussions surrounding the proposed Kids Online Safety Act in the United States.
