Mark Zuckerberg has begun his quest to kill the smartphone

In a world where smartphone addiction is rampant, Meta is proposing a revolutionary alternative: smart glasses. During the Meta Connect 2025 keynote, CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized, "The promise of glasses is to preserve this sense of presence that you have with other people." He believes that smartphones have detracted from genuine interactions, and this new technology could restore that connection. Meta’s latest offering, the Meta Ray-Ban Display, aims to challenge the dominance of Apple and Google in the tech market. The company, which has faced scrutiny over its Reality Labs division's significant financial losses, hopes this sophisticated device will carve out a new niche in consumer electronics. Zuckerberg revealed that the glasses would incorporate features such as cameras, speakers, microphones, and an AI assistant, making them a formidable competitor to existing smartphones. What truly sets the Meta Ray-Ban Display apart is the innovative Meta Neural Band, a wristband equipped with surface electromyography (sEMG) technology. This device interprets signals from the brain to the hand, allowing users to compose messages through gestures. Although the keynote showcased some technical glitches, the demonstration of the wristband's capabilities was intriguing. Zuckerberg claimed he could write at approximately 30 words per minute, a commendable feat compared to the average texting speed on smartphones. Unlike previous iterations of Meta's smart glasses, this model enables users to send messages discreetly without needing to speak aloud. While gesture controls are not entirely new, the potential for this wristband to facilitate more intricate gestures is promising. Since 2021, Meta has heavily invested in sEMG research, hinting at future advancements in this technology. As Meta embarks on this ambitious journey, it remains to be seen whether smart glasses can truly replace the convenience of smartphones. Zuckerberg's vision suggests a future where technology enhances our social interactions rather than detracts from them. The success of the Meta Ray-Ban Display could signal a significant cultural shift, moving from traditional smartphones to an era dominated by smart glasses.
