Another one leaves Apple: Meta lures away AI chief Ruoming Pang with big offer

In a significant shake-up within the tech industry, Ruoming Pang, a leading AI engineer at Apple Inc., has made the leap to Meta. This departure has raised eyebrows, particularly as Pang was at the helm of Apple's foundational models team, which plays a crucial role in the company's AI initiatives. Pang's transition to Meta comes as the company aggressively builds its superintelligence division, aiming to enhance its AI capabilities. Notably, Pang joined Apple in 2021 from Alphabet Inc. and has been instrumental in developing large language models that power essential features in Apple's AI suite, known as Apple Intelligence. These models are vital for functionalities such as email summarization and smart notification filtering on Apple devices. Reports indicate that Meta secured Pang with a lucrative compensation package that could be worth tens of millions annually. This strategic recruitment is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's broader vision to bolster the company's AI prowess, following the hiring of other prominent figures from the tech world, including Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman. Meta confirmed Pang’s new role on Monday, while Apple has yet to comment on his departure. The move arrives during a turbulent period for Apple’s AI division, where internal tensions have surfaced. Insiders suggest that the morale within the foundational models team has declined amid increased scrutiny from Apple’s leadership. Complicating matters, Apple has recently restructured its AI leadership, with key responsibilities for Siri and machine learning frameworks reassigned to different executives. Mike Rockwell now oversees Siri's development, while Craig Federighi manages the overall AI roadmap. Following Pang’s exit, the team will be led by Zhifeng Chen, who faces the challenge of maintaining stability in a reshaped management structure. As the dust settles, the potential for further departures looms, with many team members reportedly eyeing opportunities at Meta. The recent exit of Tom Gunter, one of Pang’s key deputies, adds to the sense of uncertainty within Apple’s AI division. This development signals ongoing challenges for Apple as it navigates the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence.
