In a significant shift for Meta Platforms Inc., CEO Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled plans for a restructured artificial intelligence division, focusing on the ambitious goal of creating AI 'superintelligence.' This initiative, aimed at developing systems that can perform tasks with human-like or superior efficiency, is now organized under a new entity known as Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). According to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, the group will be spearheaded by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, whom Zuckerberg praised as one of the most remarkable founders of his generation. Wang will take on the role of chief AI officer, while Nat Friedman, ex-CEO of GitHub, will collaborate with Wang to guide the group's efforts in AI product development and applied research. Zuckerberg expressed his optimism about the future of AI in a message to employees, emphasizing that the rapid advancement in AI technology is paving the way for a transformative era for humanity. He committed to Meta's leadership in this field, announcing a staggering investment of 'hundreds of billions' in AI research and projects over the coming years. He acknowledged, however, that many companies may overspend in their race to join the AI revolution. As part of this new direction, the MSL will integrate existing teams focused on large language models and generative AI technology, as well as the Fundamental AI Research team, known as FAIR. Zuckerberg also indicated plans to establish a new lab dedicated to the next generation of AI models. With the competition heating up against titans like OpenAI and Google, Zuckerberg is prioritizing AI development, investing heavily in infrastructure—ranging from advanced chips to data centers—and in acquiring top talent. Earlier this month, Meta announced a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, part of its broader strategy to bolster its AI capabilities. The company is also in discussions to acquire startups like Perplexity AI and Runway AI, with expectations of bringing PlayAI, a firm specializing in voice replication through AI, into the fold. Zuckerberg has taken a hands-on approach in recruiting talent for these AI teams, hosting potential hires at his residences in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe, and leading much of the outreach personally. As a testament to Meta's commitment to attracting top researchers, the company is offering lucrative compensation packages, including stock awards potentially worth tens of millions of dollars. In addition to the new structural changes, Zuckerberg confirmed the hiring of 11 new members for the MSL team, drawing talent from leading AI organizations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Notable hires include former DeepMind researchers and several from OpenAI, reflecting Meta's dedication to building a powerhouse in the AI landscape.
