This revelation came from OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, during an appearance on the 'Uncapped' podcast hosted by his brother. Altman disclosed that while Meta is eager to bring on a significant number of OpenAI employees, none of their top talent has accepted the offers thus far. He remarked, "I've heard that Meta thinks of us as their biggest competitor," acknowledging their ambitious AI aspirations amid challenges. He also noted Meta's AI initiatives have yet to meet expectations, adding that he respects their aggressive approach to innovation. Despite these recruitment efforts, Meta has faced setbacks, including delaying the launch of its latest AI model due to concerns regarding its performance. Additionally, it has emerged that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is intensely focused on assembling a premier AI team for a new lab dedicated to developing 'superintelligence'—an AI system that could outperform human intelligence. Recent reports indicate that Zuckerberg's frustration with Meta's AI progress has pushed him to invest billions in acquiring top-tier talent. Notably, Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI, recently announced his transition to Meta, coinciding with a substantial $14.3 billion investment by Meta for a 49% stake in Wang's startup. As part of this deal, a handful of Scale AI employees will also join Meta, and Wang is expected to lead research efforts aimed at superintelligence. Moreover, Meta has successfully attracted other prominent figures, such as Jack Rae from Google DeepMind, further signifying its commitment to enhancing its AI division. Altman, reflecting on Meta's recruitment strategy, indicated that the company's approach of offering large upfront salaries may not foster a productive work environment. He suggested that merely attempting to replicate OpenAI's model is unlikely to yield success, stating, "That basically never works." Amidst these developments, some analysts have defended Meta's position in the AI landscape, asserting that the company has laid essential groundwork for open-source AI development. Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, highlighted that Meta's extensive investments, particularly in Scale AI, are likely to propel the company forward in training its advanced models, reinforcing the idea that Meta remains a significant player in the evolving AI arena.
