Sam Altman says Meta is offering $100 million to poach his employees

Sam Altman says Meta is offering $100 million to poach his employees

In a surprising revelation, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, disclosed that Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is aggressively pursuing talent from his company with staggering signing bonuses reaching up to $100 million. During an appearance on the 'Uncapped' podcast hosted by his brother Jack, Altman shared insights into Meta's recruitment tactics. "They started making giant offers to a lot of people on our team," he stated, highlighting the intense competition in the tech sector. However, he assured listeners that none of OpenAI's top talent have accepted these lucrative offers as of now. Altman expressed skepticism about Meta's innovation capabilities, suggesting that their current AI initiatives have not met expectations. "I respect being aggressive and continuing to try new things," he remarked, but added, "I don’t think they’re a company that’s great at innovation. I think we understand a lot of things they don’t." This discussion comes amid reports that Zuckerberg is taking a personal interest in building a new team focused on developing superintelligent machines that could surpass human intelligence. His frustration with Meta’s AI progress has led him to meet with industry experts at his residences and even reconfigure the workspace at the Menlo Park headquarters to facilitate this new initiative. Recently, Meta announced a significant $14.3 billion investment for a 49% stake in Scale AI, aiming to bolster its AI ambitions. This deal also includes bringing some employees from Scale AI into the Meta fold. Over the years, Zuckerberg has been increasingly focused on transforming Meta into a leader in AI, although results have been mixed, especially in light of the advancements made by rivals like OpenAI, which has secured billions in funding.
