Meta smartwatch may debut in 2025 with AI capabilities and dual cameras

Meta Platforms is reportedly reviving its much-anticipated smartwatch initiative, with a potential launch aimed for September 2025. This wearable device is expected to incorporate dual cameras and advanced artificial intelligence features, serving as a companion to Meta's forthcoming AI-powered smart glasses. According to sources from DigiTimes, the timing of the smartwatch's launch could coincide with the company’s annual Meta Connect event, set for September 17-18 in the United States. Huaqin Technology, a Chinese manufacturer, is believed to be the primary hardware partner for this project. This revival represents a second attempt to introduce a Meta-branded smartwatch. The concept first emerged in 2021 with the codename “Milan,” which described a device featuring a curved display, a front camera, and a side-mounted physical button. A prototype revealed in 2022 showcased two cameras—a 5MP front camera and a 10MP rear camera—encased in a stylish gold-colored shell with dual buttons. This version was under development by Meta’s Reality Labs and aimed to offer sophisticated interaction capabilities, such as interpreting neural signals from the wrist to execute commands. However, complications with the functionality of the second camera led to the project's cancellation in June 2022. The latest reports suggest that Meta has resumed development, though uncertainty remains about whether the smartwatch will be unveiled during the upcoming Meta Connect conference. This unpredictability echoes previous inconsistencies regarding the project's timeline. If successfully launched, the Meta smartwatch could position the company in a competitive landscape currently led by Apple and Samsung. Its unique camera-based features might provide a significant edge in the market. As it stands, Meta has yet to officially confirm any details regarding the device's specifications or release timeline.
