Instagram is alerting users who were targeted by hackers during AI chatbot attacks

A recent wave of hacking incidents has emerged, exploiting Meta's AI chatbot to seize control of Instagram accounts, even after the company claimed to have addressed the issue. Over the past weekend, numerous reports surfaced on social media from users whose accounts had been compromised, often involving unique short profile handles. Hackers allegedly took advantage of Meta's AI support chatbot, posing as account owners and requesting to link their accounts to emails they controlled. This straightforward tactic allowed them to reset passwords and hijack accounts, locking out the legitimate users in the process. Notably, the attacks targeted several high-profile accounts, including a dormant Obama White House account, which Meta disputed, and the account of John Bentivegna, the chief master sergeant of the U.S. Space Force. The simplicity of these attacks raises concerns about Meta's security measures, as they allowed hackers to manipulate the chatbot without human oversight. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone assured that the issue had been resolved; however, reports of new hacks continued to emerge. Users have received notifications from Instagram indicating suspicious activity on their accounts, prompting them to reset their passwords. In a recent post on X, Stone acknowledged that some users might see password reset requests or be asked security questions upon attempting to log in. Meta secured the affected accounts and began sending password reset emails, but the number of compromised accounts remains undisclosed. As noted by 404 Media, the use of AI in Meta's support system was introduced in March, with the chatbot designed to handle account issues autonomously. This raises questions about the security implications when such critical functions are assigned to automated systems. The market for stolen 'OG' usernames has existed for years, where hackers sell coveted handles from early Instagram users. Previously, such takeovers required complex techniques, but the recent incidents reveal a troubling ease with which hackers can exploit the AI system to achieve their goals.
