Apple loses another top AI executive to Mark Zuckerberg’s dream team

In a significant shift within the tech industry, Apple has seen another key executive depart for Meta, as Mark Zuckerberg continues to build his AI powerhouse. According to a report from Bloomberg, Frank Chu, a senior figure at Apple who played a crucial role in the company's AI-driven cloud infrastructure, is set to join Meta's newly established Superintelligence Labs. Chu's expertise includes managing the deployment of large language models on Apple's cloud servers and contributing to the training of AI software. His work also extended to enhancing Siri's search capabilities and entertainment services. This move marks a continuation of a trend that began in July, when several Apple executives started making the transition to Meta amid Zuckerberg's extensive recruitment efforts. Notably, Ruoming Pang, who led Apple's models team, left for Meta with a staggering compensation package of over $200 million, paving the way for additional departures, including engineers Tom Gunter, Mark Lee, Bowen Zhang, and Yun Zhu. Chu's exit is particularly significant due to his close collaboration with Benoit Dupin, Apple's AI infrastructure head, who directly reports to John Giannandrea, the company's chief of AI strategy. At Meta, Chu will join the MSL Infra team, which is dedicated to AI infrastructure development. This move comes even as Meta has announced a slowdown in hiring across its teams, with an internal memo indicating that only business-critical roles will continue to be filled. Despite this, Zuckerberg continues to attract talent from prominent companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The ongoing departures from Apple highlight the company's struggles to maintain its competitive edge in AI, particularly as it faces delays in revamping Siri. The loss of key personnel, including Pang, has raised concerns about the future of Apple's AI initiatives and its ability to keep pace with rivals in this rapidly evolving field.
