Instagram's newest AI tool didn't survive the week

Meta has officially retracted its newly launched feature that enabled users to create AI-generated images using public Instagram posts, just days after its introduction. The feature, named Muse Image, was announced on Tuesday as a part of Meta Superintelligence Labs' latest offerings but faced immediate backlash from users over privacy issues and potential misuse. In an announcement on Friday, Meta acknowledged the widespread criticism of Muse Image, stating, "Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We've heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available." Despite the removal of this specific feature, other functionalities of Muse Image, such as photo editing tools, will remain accessible to users. The rapid backlash from the Instagram community highlighted significant concerns regarding privacy and the potential for deepfake technology to proliferate. Many users took to social media platforms like X and Reddit to share methods for opting out of the feature. Privacy advocates, including Apar Gupta of the Internet Freedom Foundation, expressed their disapproval in a video, emphasizing that Meta's ownership of a major social media platform should not justify infringements on user consent and privacy. Entertainment organizations also voiced their opposition to the feature. SAG-AFTRA, representing approximately 160,000 professionals in media and entertainment, urged its members to disengage from the AI tool. In a statement, the union criticized the lack of a transparent opt-in process for using Instagram users' images, labeling it a significant misjudgment of public sentiment concerning the inherent risks of such practices. The union praised Meta's decision to discontinue the feature, stating, "With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate its discontinuance. It is the responsible thing to do." Creative Artists Agency, representing numerous prominent celebrities, echoed these sentiments, asserting that no individual's likeness or creative work should be utilized by any third party, including AI, without explicit consent. The introduction of AI technology has stoked concern among entertainers, who fear the unauthorized use of their likenesses and voices. Notably, celebrities like Matthew McConaughey and Jeremy Clarkson have sought legal protections to safeguard their identities from AI exploitation. This incident follows a similar backlash faced by OpenAI over its Sora 2 AI video-generation platform, which was shuttered after it allowed users to create content with trademarked characters without proper licensing.
