Meta users say paying for Verified support has been useless in the face of mass bans

When Meta introduced its paid verification service, Meta Verified, in 2023, it promised users and businesses direct access to customer support. However, in light of a wave of mass bans impacting Facebook and Instagram accounts, many paying subscribers are reporting a lack of assistance from Meta’s customer service during their most critical times—particularly when their accounts have been mistakenly suspended. Frustrated users have taken to social media and TechCrunch to share their experiences with Meta Verified support representatives, describing their interactions as dismissive and unhelpful. Speculation is rife that these account suspensions may have been triggered by automated AI systems, impacting users for weeks, if not months. A growing petition urging Meta to resolve these issues has surpassed 25,500 signatures, indicating widespread dissatisfaction. Additionally, users have formed groups on Reddit to share tips and support, with some even threatening legal action. While tens of thousands of users are grappling with these bans, this number represents just a fraction of Meta’s billions of global users. Yet, for those whose businesses or personal brands have abruptly vanished from Facebook or Instagram, the repercussions are severe. Many have also lost access to cherished memories and years of photos, leaving them devastated. So far, Meta has only publicly acknowledged the problems with Facebook Groups, stating last week that they are addressing a “technical error” responsible for the suspensions. Although a brief mention of the issue appears on an Instagram help page, the company has not confirmed whether AI, malware, or other factors have caused the bans. Instead, on its Instagram Help page, Meta noted, "We’re aware that some users are having issues accessing their Instagram accounts and we apologize for the inconvenience." For users who have been locked out of their accounts for extended periods despite making appeals, these issues extend beyond mere inconveniences. Manya Khurana, a Meta user, expressed her frustration: “I opened around 5-6 tickets on my Verified account. The agents were dismissive and even closed the chat. I have had the account since 2017 and never had an issue. They suspended me, saying I did not follow community guidelines, which is false. I was about to launch my small business, and now my career has been affected. This has been heartbreaking.” In emails shared with TechCrunch, other users have recounted similar experiences, revealing unproductive conversations with support reps who seemed unable to resolve the erroneous bans. Nikolas Alvarez shared his ordeal: “I got my Instagram account falsely disabled for ‘creating accounts while suspended’ when I never even made any account, nor have I ever been suspended before. This was a false ban because I have never done anything to break Meta’s Community Guidelines.” Many users are voicing their concerns on social media, illustrating the chaos surrounding the ban wave. Complaints highlight the unhelpfulness of Meta Verified reps, with users describing long wait times for responses and receiving generic answers instead of real solutions. Some users who expected immediate assistance found themselves on a waitlist instead. One user reported that a Meta representative indicated the company was overwhelmed by a malware issue, leading to an influx of support tickets. While this remains unverified, there is some evidence that a few users have regained access to their accounts weeks or months after their initial suspensions. Despite repeated requests for a comment, Meta's Communications Director Andy Stone has yet to provide an update on the ongoing situation, leaving users in uncertainty about the future of their accounts.
