Meta launches ‘Vibes,’ a short-form video feed of AI slop

Meta has launched a new feature called 'Vibes' within its Meta AI app and on meta.ai, designed for the creation and sharing of short AI-generated videos. This fresh feed is reminiscent of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, but it has raised eyebrows due to the nature of the content it promotes. CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased Vibes in an Instagram post that included a variety of whimsical AI-generated clips. Viewers can expect to see everything from fuzzy creatures jumping between blocks to a cat playfully kneading dough. One particularly striking video depicts an ancient Egyptian figure taking a selfie, adding a surreal twist to the content. As users explore the Vibes feed, they will encounter AI-generated videos from both creators and other users. Over time, the platform's algorithm aims to tailor content to individual preferences. Users can create videos from scratch or remix existing ones, with options to modify visuals, add music, and adjust styles before sharing their creations. The final product can be posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels. However, the reception has been less than enthusiastic. Many users voiced their dissatisfaction with the new feature, with comments like "gang nobody wants this" and "Bro’s posting AI slop on his own app" dominating the conversation. The general sentiment suggests that there is little interest in an AI-driven version of TikTok, especially as social media platforms grapple with an influx of low-quality AI content. This launch comes amid Meta's efforts to enhance its AI capabilities, as the company seeks to compete with leaders in the space like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. Earlier this year, Meta restructured its AI initiatives, creating the 'Meta Superintelligence Labs' and reorganizing its division into four groups focused on foundational models, research, product integration, and infrastructure. Despite these efforts, the introduction of Vibes seems at odds with Meta's previous messaging about prioritizing authentic storytelling over unoriginal content.
