Meta launches AI algorithm personalization feature for Threads

Meta has introduced an innovative AI tool named "Dear Algo" that empowers Threads users to tailor their content recommendations. This new feature allows users to specify the types of posts they wish to see, akin to how individuals interact with chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT through written prompts. This launch is part of Meta's ongoing effort to integrate artificial intelligence across its platforms. Just a day earlier, the company unveiled AI capabilities for Facebook, enabling users to animate their profile pictures and modify images with the assistance of the Meta AI. In a recent update to investors, Meta revealed plans to allocate between $115 billion and $135 billion for AI-related capital expenditures this year—almost double the previous year's budget, which was directed toward revamping the AI division. "Dear Algo" joins Threads, Meta's micro-blogging platform launched in July 2023 as a competitor to Twitter, now known as X, following the merger of Elon Musk's xAI and SpaceX earlier this month. Last month, Meta reported that Threads had reached 400 million monthly active users and announced plans for a global advertising rollout. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in January that Meta aims to introduce and evaluate new AI products and features by 2026, supporting their significant investments in data centers and computing infrastructure. To utilize the "Dear Algo" feature, users need to create a public post starting with "Dear Algo" to specify their content preferences. A Meta spokesperson noted that the feature was inspired by the trend of users sharing requests using the same phrase. Once a request is posted, "Dear Algo" will adjust the user’s feed for three days to keep them engaged with the latest discussions. Additionally, users have the option to repost others' requests to modify their own feeds accordingly. Testing for the feature will begin in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for broader availability in the future.
