Meta quietly launches a new Reddit-like app called Forum

Meta has introduced a new application named 'Forum,' designed specifically for Facebook Groups. This platform is being compared to Reddit, as it aims to provide a space for more meaningful discussions and interactions among users. Upon signing in with their Facebook credentials, users will find their groups, profiles, and activities readily accessible. Forum allows individuals to post under a pseudonym, similar to the experience offered by the main Facebook app. Importantly, the app maintains the connection to Facebook, ensuring that any activity on Forum is reflected within the original Facebook Groups. Forum's design emphasizes group conversations, focusing on genuine user interactions rather than trending topics. It aims to help users seamlessly continue discussions where they left off. Additionally, the app features an AI-driven 'Ask' tab that enables users to inquire and receive answers based on insights gathered from various groups. An AI assistant for administrators is also included to facilitate group management and content moderation. This isn’t the first initiative by Meta to create standalone apps for group interactions. In 2014, the company launched a dedicated Groups app, which ultimately was discontinued in 2017. The release of Forum follows the recent introduction of another app, Instants, which allows users to share temporary photos with friends on Instagram. These launches are part of a broader strategy at Meta, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg has indicated a shift towards developing more applications, leveraging AI for increased efficiency. Reports suggest that Zuckerberg is exploring the possibility of creating up to 50 new apps, though he acknowledges the need to start with a few before expanding rapidly. However, the reception of these new apps may be mixed, as critics point out that many are simply iterations of existing popular platforms, such as Instants' resemblance to BeReal and Snapchat, and Meta Edits' similarity to ByteDance's CapCut. Meta has not yet responded to inquiries regarding these developments.
