Meta researchers are developing a gesture-controlled wristband that can interact with a computer

Researchers at Meta are pioneering a groundbreaking wristband that enables users to control computers through hand gestures. This innovative device allows individuals to move a cursor, launch applications, and even compose messages by 'writing' in the air, akin to using a pencil. The wristband utilizes a technology known as surface electromyography (sEMG), which captures electrical signals produced by muscle activity, thereby interpreting the user's movements. This capability allows the device to detect a person's intended actions even before they are executed, as detailed in a recent publication in the journal Nature. One of the key objectives of this wristband is to offer a less invasive means for individuals with motor disabilities to interact with technology. In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, Meta is testing the device on participants with spinal cord injuries, aiming to empower them to use computers despite limited arm or hand mobility. Douglas Weber, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Neuroscience Institute, highlighted that individuals with complete hand paralysis still exhibit residual muscle activity. This allows the wristband to interpret their intended movements effectively. Compared to other advanced technologies, such as Elon Musk's Neuralink, which focuses on implanting brain chips in those with severe paralysis, Meta's wristband presents a more accessible option. While other non-invasive methods, like EEG headsets, encounter challenges due to their weaker signal detection, the wristband's reliance on sEMG signals ensures a more responsive and immediate user experience without the need for surgical procedures.
