During the recent Meta Connect developer conference, while much of the focus was on new smart glasses, Meta made headlines with the announcement of Hyperscape. Initially showcased at last year's event, this innovative technology empowers developers and creators to craft highly realistic virtual environments. Hyperscape Capture is now available in Early Access for Quest device users, enabling them to swiftly scan their surroundings and transform them into immersive digital replicas. The scanning process is quick, taking only a few minutes, but rendering the room into a detailed virtual space may require several hours, according to Meta. At launch, users will not have the option to invite others into their created spaces, though Meta has indicated that this feature will be introduced later through private links. Notable locations already rendered using Hyperscape technology include celebrity hotspots like Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen in Los Angeles and Chance the Rapper’s House of Kicks, among others. This technology, which utilizes advanced techniques such as Gaussian Splatting and cloud rendering, allows users aged 18 and older with either a Quest 3 or Quest 3S headset to experience these virtual worlds. The rollout is gradual, starting today, meaning some users might not have immediate access. In addition to Hyperscape, Meta revealed a series of new metaverse updates, including an exciting lineup of upcoming VR games such as Marvel’s Deadpool VR and Star Wars: Beyond Victory. The streaming app Horizon TV will also expand its offerings to include popular services like Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu, alongside a partnership with Universal Pictures for immersive horror films like “M3GAN.” A limited-time 3D preview of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will also be available to users.
