Meta centralizes Facebook and Instagram support, tests AI support assistant

Meta has introduced a new centralized support hub aimed at improving user experiences on Facebook and Instagram. Announced on Thursday, the company recognized that its previous support offerings fell short of user expectations. This new hub will provide essential tools for reporting account issues, recovering lost accounts, and accessing information through an AI-powered search and assistant. Currently being rolled out globally on both iOS and Android platforms, the AI assistant is designed to deliver personalized support for tasks such as account recovery, profile management, and settings updates. Initially, this feature will be made available exclusively to Facebook users, with plans to expand it to other Meta applications in the near future. Meta asserts that its implementation of AI technologies has significantly bolstered account security, reporting a global reduction of over 30% in account hacks across its platforms. The AI is also instrumental in identifying and mitigating various threats, including phishing attempts and suspicious logins. Additionally, the company claims that AI has minimized the number of accounts mistakenly disabled, enhancing the efficiency of the appeals process when errors occur. Despite these assurances, many users express frustration over their experiences with account access issues. Numerous complaints detail lost access to accounts and Facebook Pages, often attributing these problems to errors made by Meta's automated systems. Some affected users have even resorted to legal action, particularly when such account issues have adversely impacted their businesses or livelihoods. In response to these challenges, Meta hopes that the new support hub will alleviate such problems by consolidating account recovery options and providing clearer guidance for verification processes. Improvements include better SMS and email alerts for suspicious activities and enhanced recognition of user devices. Moreover, the hub will facilitate access to security tools such as security checkups, two-factor authentication setup, and passkey addition. For identity verification during account recovery, users now have the option to submit a selfie video. While Meta claims this new hub will streamline user support, the frequent relocation of settings and help features over the years may confuse users, as they struggle to navigate the ever-changing landscape of account management tools within the app.
