Meta has announced its foray into Canada with plans to construct its inaugural large-scale data center in Alberta. In a blog post shared on Wednesday, the tech giant revealed that the facility, designed to deliver 1 gigawatt of power, represents a significant investment of approximately $9 billion. The construction is anticipated to span two to three years. This new site will be Meta's 33rd data center as the company accelerates its efforts to bolster infrastructure in response to the surging demand for artificial intelligence services. Alberta stands out as a prime location due to its abundant energy resources and a regulatory environment conducive to such developments. Sturgeon County, the designated area for the data center, has a history of being zoned for industrial purposes and possesses the capacity for additional energy facilities. A spokesperson for Meta highlighted the advantages of this location, noting its strong access to infrastructure, a reliable electric grid, and an available skilled workforce. Moreover, local community partners have played a crucial role in advancing the project. While Meta is aggressively expanding its AI capabilities, the company is also strategizing a new cloud computing venture, which may entail selling surplus capacity to third-party clients or providing access to AI models hosted on its infrastructure. Investors, however, have expressed skepticism regarding Meta's ambitious projections, which estimate capital expenditures of up to $145 billion for the current year. This comes as the company trails behind AI frontrunners like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, while struggling to establish a revenue model beyond its traditional online advertising. Meta's stock has seen a decline of about 9% this year, contrasting with an 11% rise in the Nasdaq index. The race to establish AI infrastructure is heating up, with competitors like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon already leading the charge in the cloud services market. Concerns from local communities have also surfaced, with a report from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in June raising issues regarding environmental impacts, including emissions, water usage, and noise generated by data centers. In response, Meta has collaborated with various energy companies in Canada, such as Greenlight Limited Partnership and the Alberta Electric System Operator, to strategically plan for the energy requirements well ahead of the data center's operational launch. The construction phase is expected to provide significant employment opportunities, supporting over 3,000 workers at its peak, and will also involve investments aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and supporting community nonprofits.
