Meta wants to bring its Business AI chat tools to third-party websites

Meta is taking a significant step to broaden its business beyond online advertising by introducing AI-driven chat tools designed for companies to implement on their own websites. This new initiative, launched with the Business AI digital assistant, aims to enhance customer interactions through personalized product recommendations and expedited purchasing processes via chat. Retailers can leverage the Business AI assistant across platforms like Facebook and Instagram, as well as through their own Shopify-powered websites. This latest development reflects Meta's commitment to integrating generative AI into its business strategy, a venture that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has heavily invested in. As the tech landscape becomes increasingly competitive with the rise of sophisticated digital assistants, Meta is positioning itself to help businesses optimize customer experiences. Clara Shih, head of business AI at Meta, emphasized this goal during a recent press briefing, stating, “We are venturing beyond advertisements to assist businesses in enhancing their customer engagement and operations.” The Business AI assistant will be offered free of charge for integration into Meta ads, allowing customers to inquire about products and facilitate easier purchases directly through Facebook and Instagram. However, businesses wishing to utilize the assistant on their own websites will incur a yet-to-be-determined cost, which Shih assures will be more affordable compared to existing market options. The rollout will soon expand to include WhatsApp and Messenger in Mexico and the Philippines, with plans for additional markets to follow. Shih mentioned that utilizing the Business AI across Meta platforms and retail websites would ideally yield more relevant responses to product inquiries. Meta is collaborating with notable companies like Salesforce, Microsoft, ServiceNow, and Zendesk to enhance its customer relationship management capabilities as part of this AI initiative. Shih likened the functionality of the Business AI to a customer inquiring about warranty information from a salesperson, who would guide them to the appropriate support staff for more complex issues. In a move to strengthen its offerings, Meta previously acquired the enterprise CRM startup Kustomer for $1 billion in 2020 but later restructured it as an independent entity in 2023 during its efficiency-focused initiatives. Additionally, Meta has introduced a separate tool named the Meta AI business assistant, tailored for advertisers to troubleshoot account issues and assess their ad campaign performance.
