In a bid to enhance user interaction and keep pace in the competitive AI landscape, Meta has announced exciting new features for Facebook, including the innovative 'AI Mode.' This update, revealed on Monday, aims to revolutionize how users gather information, generate content, and engage with the platform. AI Mode allows users to search Facebook using plain language queries, tapping into Meta's AI to deliver synthesized answers derived from public posts, including those found in Groups and Reels. Instead of the traditional scrolling through results, users can now ask direct questions and receive responses that reflect real discussions occurring on the platform. This release follows Meta’s recent launch of Forum, a Reddit-like app that includes an AI 'Ask' tab. This feature lets users post questions and receive answers sourced from group conversations throughout Facebook. However, this approach raises important questions about the reliability of information generated from public sharing, echoing concerns previously highlighted regarding Google's AI functionalities on Reddit. Beyond search capabilities, Facebook is also rolling out new editing tools that enhance user-generated content. Features like collage cutouts and transition effects for videos are now available, alongside AI-driven photo presets that allow users to virtually try on different outfits, hairstyles, and accessories. For example, sports enthusiasts can effortlessly don their favorite team jerseys using the 'AI Edit' feature in Stories. These updates are part of Meta's strategy to enrich Facebook's AI toolkit, which has seen several enhancements in recent months. Earlier this year, animated profile pictures were introduced, allowing users to bring still images to life with effects like waves or festive hats. In addition, an AI feature for Facebook Marketplace was launched to automatically handle buyer inquiries for sellers. Most recently, an AI assistant was introduced for creators, providing tailored suggestions on optimal posting times and summarizing audience engagement in comments based on past performance. Collectively, these advancements underscore Meta's goal of making Facebook more engaging while simultaneously exploring new revenue streams. The company has also rolled out subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, starting at $3.99 per month, with more AI-focused subscription options on the horizon.
