Meta rolls out AI-powered video editing across apps and web

Meta has officially launched a groundbreaking generative AI feature for video editing, now accessible through the Meta AI app, the Meta.AI website, and the Edits app. This innovative tool is specifically designed to make video editing simpler for users who lack professional skills, enabling them to enhance short videos with a variety of pre-defined AI prompts. This rollout is part of Meta's larger initiative to weave AI-powered content creation capabilities into its platforms. Drawing inspiration from its Movie Gen models, the new feature allows users to modify 10-second segments of their videos in a myriad of ways. Changes can include alterations to clothing, settings, and visual aesthetics, providing an easy entry point for individuals looking to personalize and creatively express their video content. Users can conveniently upload their videos via the Meta AI app, Edits app, or the Meta.AI website. They can then select from a collection of over 50 prompts to enhance their clips. The transformation options are diverse, ranging from stylized effects—such as turning the footage into a graphic novel or a retro comic book—to mood adjustments, like transforming a dreary outdoor scene into a whimsical, soft-focus image complete with sparkles and vibrant color filters. Additionally, there’s a gaming-themed preset that infuses the clips with video game-inspired visuals and character designs, featuring neon lighting and battle-ready outfits. Rendered by Meta's AI, these edits are available at no cost for a limited period, though users can only process segments of up to ten seconds during this trial phase. After editing, videos can be seamlessly shared on Meta's social platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, directly through the Edits and Meta AI apps. The web version at Meta.AI also offers users the chance to publish their creations to the Discover feed, broadening the visibility of user-generated content within Meta's ecosystem. The company has worked closely with content creators to ensure that the prompt styles resonate with the digital audience. This tool is not only aimed at casual creators but also serves as a valuable resource for social media influencers and video makers seeking to optimize their production processes. Currently available in the United States and over a dozen other countries, this feature marks Meta's first significant step into consumer-facing AI video editing. The company has indicated that more advanced features, including the capability to customize video edits with free-form text prompts, are expected to be introduced later this year.
