Meta is now designing its own, cheaper AI smart glasses

On Tuesday, Meta revealed its latest venture into wearable technology with a new line of AI-powered smart glasses, designed entirely in-house. This strategic move aims to solidify its position in the competitive world of artificial intelligence gadgets. The standout feature of these new Meta Glasses is their affordability, starting at just $299, significantly lower than the latest Ray-Ban models priced at $379. This price reduction could broaden their appeal, a crucial factor for Meta as it strives to validate its substantial investments in AI. Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of accessibility in the market, stating, "Reaching people goes beyond design and style; price point plays a critical role." The newly designed glasses mark a shift from the previous co-branded offerings created alongside EssilorLuxottica, which included popular brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley. However, Meta continues to collaborate with EssilorLuxottica on certain components, such as lenses. The glasses come in three distinct styles: the compact Adventurer, the larger and rounder Fury, and the uniquely designed Meta Glasses by Kylie, inspired by the celebrity. They boast features like music playback, language translation, and the ability to provide contextual information by capturing images through their built-in cameras, similar to Meta's earlier models. The integration of the new Muse Spark AI model enhances the glasses' ability to retrieve details from photos and adapt to user preferences. In a demonstration, the glasses showcased their capabilities by estimating calorie content in strawberries, translating Arabic signs to English, and suggesting nearby museums, all while identifying fake food props. However, these functionalities mirror those of Meta’s existing eyewear, which may not be sufficient to sway skeptics of smart glasses. The Jenner-designed model offers a personalized touch, featuring a special chime when worn and the option to replace the standard AI voice with a version that mimics Jenner's real voice. Despite these innovations, analysts caution that tech companies face challenges in convincing consumers that smart glasses and similar wearables can surpass smartphone utility. Market predictions indicate that smart glasses prices will decrease significantly over the next few years, dropping from an average of $376 in 2026 to $229 by 2030. Yet, price isn't the sole concern; privacy issues also loom large. There have been instances where individuals misused smart glasses to record others without consent, prompting Meta to implement safeguards like an LED light to indicate when recording is in progress. Meta currently holds a dominant 69.2% market share in smart glasses, with a reported tripling of daily users year-over-year. However, the competition is intensifying, as Google and Samsung prepare to launch their own AI glasses later this year, while OpenAI is also entering the hardware market. With popular AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini leading the way, Meta aims to make its smart glasses as indispensable as smartphones and smartwatches. Looking ahead, Bosworth hinted at the potential for future AI innovations that cater to individuals who do not wear glasses, suggesting that the current lineup could be just the beginning of a broader wearable technology landscape.
