At a recent TechEquity AI Summit in Sunnyvale, California, a Meta product leader revealed that the company's internal AI assistant, known as Metamate, is aiding employees in preparing for performance reviews. Joseph Spisak, a product director at Meta Superintelligence Labs, explained that this ChatGPT-like tool is designed to sift through an employee's documents and create comprehensive summaries of their yearly accomplishments. Spisak shared how he personally utilizes Metamate: "When it’s time for year-end evaluations, I simply activate Metamate. It combs through my documents, compiles all my work, and provides a summary of my achievements and feedback." He emphasized the tool's effectiveness, adding a humorous note about the potential for employees to 'reward hack' the system when queried about manipulating evaluations. Beyond performance reviews, Spisak indicated that Meta's AI instruments, trained on internal data, are leveraged for various functions, including application development. The tech giant is increasingly embedding AI into its operations, exemplified by tools like Devmate, an AI coding assistant, alongside various applications and dashboards that monitor how employees are utilizing AI. Despite the enthusiasm for Metamate, an anonymous Meta employee reported mixed experiences with the tool. While some employees are experimenting with it for performance reviews, they noted that the AI can produce inconsistent results, particularly when it lacks detailed context on specific projects. Nevertheless, the employee mentioned using Metamate to streamline feedback for colleagues by creating templates and providing relevant examples.
