Meta plans to sell targeted ads based on data in your AI chats

On Wednesday, Meta announced a significant shift in its advertising strategy, revealing plans to utilize data from user interactions with its AI products to enhance targeted advertising across its social media platforms. This change will be reflected in an updated privacy policy, which is set to take effect by December 16. Users can expect notifications regarding this update shortly. The new policy will be implemented globally, with exceptions for users in South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the European Union due to stringent privacy laws that restrict such data collection. Historically, Meta has focused on creating detailed user profiles from Facebook and Instagram interactions to sell highly-targeted ads. With the incorporation of data from conversations with its AI chatbot, the company aims to refine these profiles even further, providing advertisers with additional insights to reach specific demographics. Meta reports that over a billion users interact with its AI monthly, often engaging in lengthy discussions. Until now, the company's AI offerings have been largely free, but this new approach will allow Meta to enhance its advertising capabilities based on user data. For instance, if a user discusses hiking with the AI, they may begin to see ads for hiking equipment. Emil Vazquez, a spokesperson for Meta, clarified that the privacy update extends beyond just the AI chatbot, encompassing the company's other AI initiatives. This includes potential data usage from AI features in products like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which collect voice recordings, images, and videos. Additionally, data from the new AI video feed, Vibes, and the AI image generation tool, Imagine, may also contribute to targeted advertising efforts. It's important to note that conversations with Meta AI will only influence ad targeting on Facebook and Instagram if users are logged into the same account across platforms. Currently, there is no option to opt-out of this data usage. This development highlights a growing trend where free services from major tech companies come with hidden costs related to user data. As tech firms explore monetization strategies for their free AI products, Meta's announcement follows similar moves by other industry leaders. For example, OpenAI recently introduced a feature in ChatGPT for purchasing products, while Google is planning to integrate ads into its AI Mode search product. Although Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the possibility of future ad placements within AI products, the company has stated that there are no immediate plans to do so.
