Meta Platforms has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 10%, affecting about 7,800 employees, as revealed in an internal memo shared with staff. This decision, set to take effect on May 20, comes as the company seeks to streamline operations and balance its substantial investments in artificial intelligence and data infrastructure. Currently employing over 78,000 individuals globally, Meta is also closing around 6,000 open positions as part of this restructuring effort. The memo, issued by Chief People Officer Janella Gale, emphasizes the necessity of these layoffs to enhance operational efficiency and support ongoing investments, although specific areas of investment were not disclosed. This isn't the first wave of layoffs for the social media giant; a prior round in March saw hundreds of employees affected. Staff members who will be laid off can expect to receive a detailed notification via email on May 20, sent to both their work and personal accounts. The company assures that those impacted will receive a robust severance package, which includes 16 weeks of base pay plus an additional two weeks for each year of service. Moreover, U.S. employees will have their COBRA health coverage paid for up to 18 months. Meta has stated that while this announcement may bring uncertainty, the decision was made with the intent to secure the company's future and support employees through the transition. The memo concludes with a commitment to provide career services and immigration assistance for those affected, as well as an invitation for employees to stay informed through the People Portal for further updates and FAQs regarding the layoffs.
