Meta is shutting down Messenger’s standalone website

Meta has announced plans to discontinue its standalone Messenger website, with the service set to cease operations in April 2026. According to details shared on a help page, users will need to access messaging through Facebook instead. Once messenger.com is shut down, users will be redirected to facebook.com/messages for their messaging needs on desktop. The company assures that conversations can still be continued on this platform or via the Messenger mobile app. For those who exclusively use Messenger without a Facebook account, communication will only be possible through the mobile app. Users have the option to recover their chat history on any device using a PIN established during the initial backup setup. If users forget their PIN, a reset option will be available. This decision follows the recent closure of Messenger’s standalone desktop applications for both Windows and Mac, hinting at Meta's strategy to streamline its messaging services. The change was initially highlighted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, and Meta is informing users of this transition through pop-up notifications on both the website and app. Social media has seen a wave of user complaints, particularly from those who prefer not to rely on Facebook for their messaging needs, especially those who have opted to deactivate their Facebook accounts. While this move may cause inconvenience for some, it reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to cut costs by consolidating its platforms. Messenger, originally launched as “Facebook Chat” in 2008, evolved into a standalone app in 2011. Over the years, Meta has worked to establish Messenger as an independent service, but recent developments in 2023 have seen a re-integration of Messenger features back into the Facebook app. Meta has yet to provide a detailed response regarding user concerns.
