Meta Platforms is entering a substantial partnership with Google, securing a multi-billion-dollar rental agreement for the tech giant's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips. These chips are set to play a crucial role in the development of Meta's next-generation AI models, as the global competition for AI infrastructure intensifies amidst skyrocketing demand. While neither Meta nor Google has officially confirmed the details of the agreement, reports indicate that Meta is also exploring the purchase of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to enhance its data center capabilities. This move comes as Google has initiated a collaboration with a prominent investment firm to establish a joint venture, which will allow the tech giant to lease its specialized AI chips to a broader range of customers. Notably, in December 2025, Google was reported to be expanding its production of TPUs as an alternative to Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs). This strategy is part of Google's efforts to assure investors of its commitment to AI, with TPU sales emerging as a significant component of its business model, according to Reuters. With this new investment partnership aimed at widening access to its TPUs, Google is positioning itself as a crucial player in the AI chip infrastructure arena, extending beyond its own product offerings. Meanwhile, Meta is actively pursuing its own chip acquisition strategy, having recently finalized a deal to obtain processors from AMD worth up to $60 billion. Furthermore, the company has secured a separate agreement with Nvidia for future AI chips. These moves indicate that Meta is committed to establishing a robust and diversified chip portfolio, reinforcing its strategy in the fiercely competitive landscape of AI technology.
