Meta files lawsuit against developer of CrushAI 'nudify' app

Meta has initiated a lawsuit against Joy Timeline HK Limited, the developer of the controversial app CrushAI, which has been accused of enabling the creation of non-consensual sexualized images using artificial intelligence. This legal move, announced on Thursday, aims to halt the Hong Kong-based company from advertising on Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. The lawsuit follows a series of failed attempts by Joy Timeline to bypass Meta's ad review system, as their ads promoting CrushAI were repeatedly flagged and removed for violating community guidelines. Meta emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This legal action underscores both the seriousness with which we take this abuse and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from it." Concerns regarding nudify apps, like CrushAI, have escalated among researchers and lawmakers alike. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois previously reached out to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, urging the company to take stronger action against the ads that violate its policies on adult nudity and harassment. A report highlighted by Sen. Durbin revealed that over 8,000 ads related to CrushAI appeared on Meta's platforms within the first two weeks of the year. In addition to the lawsuit, Meta is enhancing its enforcement strategies and has developed new technologies aimed at identifying and eliminating these problematic ads, even those that do not overtly display nudity. The company is collaborating with outside experts and internal teams to adapt to the evolving tactics employed by creators of nudify apps. Furthermore, Meta plans to share information about these apps with other technology companies to ensure a collective response against such violations. The company has already disrupted four separate networks of accounts attempting to promote these services since the beginning of the year, utilizing strategies typically reserved for countering coordinated disinformation campaigns.
