Meta removes 10 million Facebook profiles in effort to combat spam

On Monday, Meta revealed that it has taken significant measures to enhance the authenticity of content on Facebook by removing approximately 10 million fake profiles. These accounts were primarily impersonating prominent content creators and were part of the company's ongoing initiative to tackle "spammy content". This effort is aimed at refining the Facebook Feed, ensuring that users are presented with more relevant and genuine posts. In addition to the profile removals, Meta has also identified around 500,000 accounts engaged in deceptive practices and spam. The company has implemented strategies to demote comments and limit the reach of content from these accounts, making it increasingly difficult for them to profit from their posts. Meta defines unoriginal content as material that reuses images or videos without proper attribution to the original creators. To combat this, the company has developed technology capable of detecting duplicate videos, which will subsequently reduce their visibility. This crackdown on spam coincides with Meta's increased investment in artificial intelligence. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans for substantial funding, amounting to "hundreds of billions of dollars", aimed at building AI computing infrastructure, with ambitions to launch the company's first supercluster next year. The rise of AI has facilitated the mass production of content across social media platforms, prompting similar actions from other networks. For instance, YouTube recently revised its policies to exclude mass-produced or repetitive content from revenue eligibility, aiming to combat what is often referred to as "AI slop." Despite initial confusion among users regarding this policy change, YouTube clarified that they support creators using AI tools to enhance their narratives, maintaining that channels incorporating AI content can still monetize their work. This updated policy is set to take effect on Tuesday.
