Meta removes Facebook page allegedly used to target ICE agents after pressure from DOJ

In a decisive move, Meta has removed a Facebook group page that was reportedly aimed at doxing and targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chicago. This action was prompted by a request from the Department of Justice (DOJ). Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the removal in a post on X, asserting that the DOJ would persist in its efforts to collaborate with tech firms to eradicate platforms that allow radicals to incite violence against federal law enforcement officials. A spokesperson for Meta confirmed the group's removal, citing violations of their policies against coordinated harm, although they did not disclose further details about the group's size or the specifics leading to its removal. This incident highlights a broader trend, as Meta's action comes on the heels of similar decisions by other tech giants such as Apple and Google. Recently, Apple removed the ICEBlock app, which had been designed to anonymously report ICE agents' locations, following Bondi's concerns about the app's potential to endanger agents merely performing their duties. Apple indicated that the decision was made based on information from law enforcement regarding safety risks. Meanwhile, Google, which had not hosted the ICEBlock app, stated that it had removed similar applications due to policy violations, despite not being contacted by the DOJ. Joshua Aaron, the creator of ICEBlock, voiced his discontent in an interview, likening his app to Waze, which helps users avoid law enforcement. He expressed his belief that these actions represent a fundamental infringement on constitutional rights under the current administration, arguing that the powers that be are yielding to governmental requests.
