Meta’s own research found parental supervision doesn’t really help curb teens’ compulsive social media use

Recent internal research conducted by Meta, in collaboration with the University of Chicago, has uncovered surprising insights regarding parental supervision and its effectiveness in managing teens' social media usage. Known as "Project MYST," the study indicates that measures such as time restrictions and access limitations do not significantly affect the compulsive use of social media among young users. The findings came to light during a high-profile trial in Los Angeles County, where a plaintiff identified as "KGM" or "Kaley" is suing various social media companies, including Meta, YouTube, TikTok, and Snap. The lawsuit alleges that these platforms create addictive products that contribute to mental health issues in young users, including anxiety, depression, and body image disorders. This case is part of a series of landmark trials addressing the social impact of social media on children. According to the study, which surveyed 1,000 teens and their parents, both parties agreed that parental involvement had little correlation with teenagers' levels of awareness regarding their social media usage. The results suggest that even with parental controls or household rules in place, teens may still struggle with overuse and compulsive behaviors. Kaley's attorney, Mark Lanier, emphasized that the internal research indicates Meta was aware of these potential harms yet chose not to disclose them publicly. The study’s results imply that traditional parental controls, such as those found in the Instagram app, may not effectively reduce the inclination for teens to excessively engage with their social media accounts. During the trial, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, claimed unfamiliarity with Project MYST, despite documents indicating he had previously approved the study. He stated that Meta conducts many research projects but could not provide specific details about MYST. The case highlights a critical aspect of social media usage: teens facing adverse life experiences, such as parental issues or bullying, reported reduced attentiveness to their social media habits. This suggests that those dealing with trauma may be more susceptible to developing problematic social media behaviors. Mosseri acknowledged that some individuals use platforms like Instagram as a means of escape from challenging realities. Meta's legal team argued that the focus of the study was on whether teens perceived their usage as excessive rather than diagnosing addiction. They also pointed to Kaley's personal circumstances, including her family dynamics and experiences of bullying, as factors influencing her emotional challenges. As the trial progresses, the jury's interpretation of studies like Project MYST and the testimonies presented could have significant implications for how social media companies approach their younger audience and how regulators may respond to concerns regarding mental health impacts.
