On Wednesday, Meta unveiled a series of enhanced scam detection tools across its platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger. These new features aim to proactively warn users about potential scams before they engage with suspicious content. One notable addition is the implementation of alerts for suspicious friend requests on Facebook. Users will receive notifications when they send or receive requests from accounts exhibiting signs of fraudulent behavior, such as having a limited number of mutual friends or displaying an unusual location. This feature is designed to prompt users to carefully evaluate whether to accept or block the request. In a similar effort, WhatsApp is introducing warnings for device linking. Scammers often exploit this feature by impersonating legitimate entities, such as talent competitions, and tricking users into linking their accounts. Meta elaborated in a blog post that these scams may involve misleading users to enter their phone numbers and device linking codes after being directed to a fraudulent website or by scanning a deceptive QR code. WhatsApp will now provide alerts indicating when a linking request shows behavioral patterns that suggest it may be a scam. Furthermore, Messenger is set to roll out its advanced scam detection capabilities to additional countries this month. Although the specific countries were not disclosed, this upgrade will alert users if their conversations with new contacts resemble common scam patterns, such as dubious job offers. Users will then have the option to share recent messages for an AI-driven scam assessment, with warnings issued if a scam is detected, encouraging users to block or report the suspicious account. Meta also shared that it removed over 159 million scam advertisements last year, with a remarkable 92% taken down before they were reported. Additionally, the company eliminated 10.9 million accounts across Facebook and Instagram that were linked to criminal scam operations, showcasing its commitment to user safety and security.
