Meta poaches Apple design exec Alan Dye to lead new creative studio in Reality Labs

In a bold move to enhance its product design capabilities, Meta has enlisted Alan Dye, the former head of Apple’s user interface team, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This strategic recruitment marks a pivotal step for Meta as it ventures deeper into the realm of consumer technology, particularly in developing smart glasses and virtual reality headsets. Dye's new role will concentrate on refining artificial intelligence functionalities within these devices, directly reporting to Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth. His departure from Apple signals a significant transition, where he will be succeeded by Steve Lemay, a veteran designer who has contributed to every major Apple interface since 1999, according to statements from Apple CEO Tim Cook. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy by Meta to bolster its competitive edge in the AI sector, having previously attracted talent from OpenAI. Notably, reports suggest that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg even resorted to delivering homemade soup to a potential recruit from OpenAI in a unique approach to talent acquisition. Following the announcement of Dye's new role, Zuckerberg unveiled plans for a creative studio within Reality Labs that he will lead. Dye will collaborate with an impressive team that includes Billy Sorrentino, another former Apple designer, alongside Joshua To, and members from Meta’s industrial design and metaverse teams. Zuckerberg envisions this studio as a convergence of design, fashion, and technology aimed at shaping the future of Meta's product offerings. He articulated this vision on Threads, emphasizing the intention to treat intelligence as a new design element and to harness its potential in creating innovative and user-centered experiences. The goal is to elevate design within Meta by assembling a talented group with diverse skills and a proven track record in developing iconic hardware and software products.
