Meta Platforms has confirmed a significant reduction in its workforce, laying off approximately 600 employees within its artificial intelligence division. This decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at streamlining operations and enhancing agility within the company, as detailed by a spokesperson in a communication to CNBC on Wednesday. The layoffs were outlined in a memo from Alexandr Wang, Meta's Chief AI Officer, who joined the company in June following its substantial $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI. The employees affected include those from various sectors of Meta's AI infrastructure, including the Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research unit and related product positions. This move comes as Meta intensifies its focus on AI technology in an effort to compete with industry giants such as OpenAI and Google. The company has committed billions of dollars towards expanding its AI capabilities through infrastructure projects and talent acquisition. Recently, Meta announced a substantial $27 billion agreement with Blue Owl Capital aimed at the development of its extensive Hyperion data center located in rural Louisiana, which is projected to be expansive enough to encompass a significant area of Manhattan, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg's statements in July.
