In a significant pivot, Meta has unveiled plans to transition its immersive platform, Horizon Worlds, towards a predominantly mobile experience. This announcement marks a decisive departure from the company's earlier metaverse aspirations, as they have explicitly stated their intention to separate Horizon Worlds from their Quest VR platform. The company's Reality Labs division, which focuses on virtual reality and smart glasses, has faced substantial financial challenges, incurring losses nearing $80 billion since 2020. The recent updates to Horizon Worlds, along with Meta's prior workforce reduction of approximately 1,500 employees—about 10% of the division—signal a major reevaluation of their VR strategy. Several VR gaming studios have also been shuttered, and the VR fitness app Supernatural, acquired in 2023, will cease new content production, entering a phase of maintenance instead. Horizon Worlds initially launched in 2021 as a VR-centric platform before expanding to web and mobile. Meta has now committed to a mobile-first approach, aiming to tap into a broader audience. This strategy is designed to position Horizon Worlds in competition with popular gaming platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite. Samantha Ryan, VP of content at Reality Labs, emphasized this shift in a recent blog post, stating, "We’re in a strong position to deliver synchronous social games at scale, thanks to our unique ability to connect those games with billions of people on the world’s biggest social networks." Despite the move away from the metaverse, Ryan reassured that Meta remains dedicated to VR hardware development, boasting a solid roadmap for future VR headsets tailored to various audience segments as the market continues to evolve. Furthermore, Meta's ambitions in AI are rapidly taking precedence. The company is diverting its investments towards AI wearables and enhancements to their AI models. CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted during the latest earnings call that AI-integrated glasses could become ubiquitous in the coming years, highlighting a substantial surge in sales of Meta's smart glasses, which have tripled over the past year, positioning them among the fastest-growing consumer electronics in history.
