Meta bought 1 GW of solar this week

In a significant move towards sustainability, Meta has finalized three new agreements to acquire nearly 1 gigawatt of solar energy this week. This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to meet its ambitious AI energy demands. With these latest deals, Meta's total solar energy acquisitions have surpassed 3 gigawatts for the year, highlighting the tech giant's commitment to renewable energy. Among the recently announced projects are two agreements in Louisiana, where Meta will purchase the environmental attributes associated with 385 megawatts of electricity. These projects are expected to be operational in about two years. Additionally, the company revealed a larger agreement earlier this week, securing 600 megawatts from a massive solar facility located near Lubbock, Texas, set to commence commercial operations in 2027. While the Texas solar plant will not directly power Meta's data centers, it will contribute to the local power grid, thereby reducing the overall energy consumption of Meta's facilities. The Louisiana projects, however, involve purchasing environmental attribute certificates (EACs), which allow Meta to offset its reliance on carbon-heavy power sources. Despite their benefits, EACs have faced scrutiny from experts who argue that they can obscure the actual carbon footprint of tech companies, especially as the demand for energy grows with the rise of AI technologies. Initially introduced when renewable energy was more expensive than fossil fuels, EACs provided a way for companies to offset emissions while encouraging investment in renewable projects. However, as the costs of solar and wind energy have plummeted, the effectiveness of EACs in stimulating new renewable developments has come into question. Experts advocate for companies to directly support the construction of new renewable energy sources to truly offset their increasing energy demands in the age of AI.
