Meta to test job applicants with AI-assisted coding interviews amid AI expansion plans: Report

Meta is set to transform its recruitment process by integrating artificial intelligence into its coding interviews. A recent report from 404 Media reveals that the tech powerhouse plans to have shortlisted candidates utilize AI assistants during their technical evaluations. This innovative approach reflects Meta's expanding commitment to generative AI technologies throughout its operations. In contrast to the conventional hiring practices that often involve AI merely scanning resumes, Meta's new strategy allows applicants to engage directly with AI tools while tackling coding challenges. Internal communications examined by the publication indicate that this initiative aims to create a more realistic simulation of the environments in which the company's engineers will work. An internal memo shared among staff stated, "Meta is developing a new type of coding interview in which candidates have access to an AI assistant. This aligns more closely with the developer environment our future employees will be part of and also reduces the effectiveness of LLM-based cheating." The message also encouraged employees to partake in mock interviews to refine this process, highlighting that the questions are still under development and that their input would be instrumental in shaping Meta's future interviewing techniques. This initiative underscores Meta's growing focus on AI skills among its workforce. As part of its strategic evolution, the company has launched Superintelligence Labs, signaling a commitment to preparing a workforce capable of collaborating with AI systems and delegating tasks to them. In a podcast discussion with Joe Rogan earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed his belief that by 2025, companies like Meta would potentially possess AI that can function as a mid-level engineer, capable of writing code. This shift follows Meta’s recent layoffs in February, where the company reduced its workforce by 3,600 employees due to disappointing performance metrics. The introduction of AI-based interviews is a crucial element of Meta’s long-term plan to ensure that new hires are well-equipped to meet the challenges of an AI-driven future.
