Meta smartwatch with built-in cameras, AI coming in September 2025

Meta Platforms is reigniting interest in its smartwatch project, which had been put on hold, with plans to unveil it as a companion device to its existing wearable lineup, including Ray-Ban smart glasses and Quest VR headsets. As reported by DigiTimes, development has recommenced, and the smartwatch could make its debut as soon as September 2025 during the anticipated Meta Connect conference. Initially launched under the codename "Milan," Meta's smartwatch initiative began in 2021. The design originally included a curved display, a front-facing camera, and a physical control button. Subsequent prototypes showcased an innovative dual-camera system featuring both a 5MP and a 10MP sensor, encased in a striking gold finish with side buttons. This evolution in design suggested a device more focused on environmental interaction rather than conventional smartwatch functionalities like health tracking and notifications. The project faced challenges and was ultimately shelved in mid-2022 due to hardware limitations and difficulties related to a nerve-signal-based control system. However, it appears that Meta is now prepared to revive this ambitious project. The renewed focus on camera integration suggests that users may soon be able to engage with their surroundings in innovative ways, aligning with Meta's overarching goals in AI and augmented reality. Distinct from competitors like the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch, it seems that Meta's smartwatch will emphasize real-time interaction and spatial awareness, functioning as an extension of the user’s experience rather than simply a wrist-mounted device. Chinese electronics maker Huaqin Technology has been named as the primary manufacturing partner for this new wearable. While the potential for a September unveiling generates excitement, DigiTimes notes that there remains some uncertainty regarding whether the smartwatch will indeed be featured at Meta Connect 2025, scheduled for September 17 and 18 in the United States. Should it launch, this smartwatch could be a significant addition to Meta's broader strategy focused on AI-driven wearables, reinforcing the company's intention to release multiple AI-enhanced devices in the near future.
