Meta’s flagship metaverse service leaves VR behind

In a significant pivot, Meta has announced that its Horizon Worlds social and gaming platform will no longer be tethered to its Quest VR headset ecosystem. Once heralded as a cornerstone of the company's metaverse ambitions, Horizon Worlds is now set to primarily target mobile users. This strategic shift was accompanied by assurances from Meta that they are still committed to the VR developer ecosystem, aiming to dispel any notions that they are stepping back from mixed reality initiatives. However, this announcement marks yet another chapter in a series of adjustments in Meta's approach to mixed reality. Recent reports indicate that Meta's Reality Labs division has faced substantial financial challenges, losing approximately $80 billion on its investments. Earlier this year, the company laid off over 1,000 employees from Reality Labs, although this does not signify the end of their mixed reality efforts, as the division still employs more than 15,000 individuals. Notably, many of the layoffs were concentrated in internal studios developing VR content, games, and experiences, leaving the augmented reality team intact as Meta continues to explore future smart glasses. As Meta shifts its focus to mobile, the implications for its broader metaverse strategy remain to be seen, but the company clearly intends to maintain its involvement in the evolving landscape of virtual and augmented reality.
