As Australia moves closer to implementing its upcoming ban on social media accounts for users under 16, Meta has begun reaching out to affected teenage users on Facebook and Instagram. Starting December 10, the company will disable access to accounts for these younger users, while new accounts will be prohibited from December 4 onward. Teens who are currently under 16 will find their accounts inaccessible until they reach that age, at which point they can return to their accounts as they left them. However, enforcing the age restriction poses a significant challenge for Meta, as users do not always provide accurate information about their birthdates when signing up for social media platforms. Digital age verification has proven to be a complex issue, often fraught with security risks. Identity verification services can become prime targets for cyberattacks, raising concerns about the safety of personal data. A notable example occurred last year, when 404 Media reported that AU10TIX, a firm responsible for verifying identities for platforms like TikTok and Uber, had unintentionally exposed sensitive user information online for an extended period, highlighting the vulnerabilities in these systems.
