Report: Meta is hitting pause on AI hiring after its poaching spree

Meta has implemented a hiring freeze within its AI division following a significant organizational reshuffle, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. This decision comes shortly after the company successfully recruited over 50 AI researchers and engineers from rival firms. The hiring freeze, which took effect last week, raises questions about its duration as Meta continues to navigate through its reorganization. This restructuring has resulted in the division of its AI unit, known as Meta Superintelligence Labs, into four distinct groups. Among them is TBD Labs, led by Alexandr Wang, the former founder of Scale AI, alongside three other groups dedicated to research, product integration, and infrastructure. Meta has confirmed the hiring halt, describing it as a necessary step for basic organizational planning following a wave of new hires and the annual budgeting process. CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s aggressive strategy to gain a competitive edge in the AI sector has ignited intense competition for talent, prompting him to reach out personally to top researchers and engineers with lucrative offers, some amounting to nine-figure compensation packages. However, analysts have raised concerns regarding the increasing costs associated with stock-based compensation, cautioning that these expenses could jeopardize returns for shareholders.
