Meta signs first AI data center deal in India with Reliance

In a significant move to bolster its AI operations, Meta has announced a partnership with Reliance Industries to establish its first AI data center in India. This collaboration, revealed on Wednesday, involves building a 168-megawatt AI-enabled facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking an important step as India emerges as a key player in the AI infrastructure landscape. The partnership builds on a foundation of cooperation that began with Meta's multibillion-dollar investment in Reliance's Jio Platforms. It has since evolved into a $100 million joint venture aimed at developing enterprise AI solutions for clients both in India and globally. This new deal aligns with a broader trend as technology giants seek out new locations for data centers to meet the surging demand for computing power required for AI model training and deployment. India is becoming a prime destination for such investments, with major companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber announcing their own AI and cloud infrastructure initiatives in the country. Moreover, the recent announcement from Blackstone-backed AirTrunk, which plans to invest $30 billion to establish 5 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2030, underscores the growing interest from both international tech firms and local conglomerates like Adani and Tata Consultancy Services. The Indian government is actively encouraging these investments through various policy incentives, including tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers delivering services from Indian data centers. According to government data, India's installed data center capacity is projected to rise from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to around 1.5 gigawatts by 2025, with estimates suggesting it could exceed 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade due to increased cloud adoption and AI workloads. The agreement between Meta and Reliance further solidifies the companies' collaboration that began with Meta's significant investment in 2020. As part of this latest venture, Meta will lease capacity at Reliance’s new facility, which is designed to operate on renewable energy and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling. Meta will also cover all expenses related to energy and water for its operations at the center. Reliance has indicated that the facility will be operational within two years and has the potential for future expansion. It will not only support Meta's AI computing needs but also integrate more closely with the company’s global network of AI infrastructure. Under the agreement, Reliance will provide comprehensive services including design, construction, renewable energy, connectivity, and ongoing operations, positioning itself as a central player in AI infrastructure for tech companies worldwide. In addition to this partnership, Meta has secured almost 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through collaborations with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, which will further bolster the energy needs for the Jamnagar facility.
