Meta inks deal to pay Corning up to $6 billion for fiber-optic cables in AI data centers

In a significant move to bolster its infrastructure for artificial intelligence, Meta has announced a partnership with Corning, a historic glass manufacturer, committing up to $6 billion for fiber-optic cables by 2030. This agreement comes as Meta accelerates the construction of expansive data centers to meet the soaring demand driven by the AI revolution. Corning's CEO, Wendell Weeks, disclosed this development during an exclusive interview conducted at a cable manufacturing facility in Hickory, North Carolina. The company is expanding its operations to cater to increasing orders from Meta and other tech giants like Nvidia, OpenAI, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, marking a substantial industry growth that is projected to reach trillions of dollars. Once completed, Corning's facility will stand as the world's largest fiber-optic cable plant. Weeks expressed the overwhelming demand, stating that many clients are eager to find ways to enhance their fiber supply. He believes that in the upcoming year, major tech companies will become Corning's primary customers. Over the past year, Corning's stock has surged over 75%, with optical communications emerging as its fastest-growing segment. Despite the optimism in the fiber-optic market, Meta's AI strategy has raised eyebrows on Wall Street. Following a disappointing market performance in 2025, Meta's stock experienced its largest drop in three years after announcing ambitious AI investments without a clear path to monetization. In a bid to secure its position, Meta pledged to invest $600 billion in the U.S. by 2028 for data centers and essential infrastructure, with Corning playing a pivotal role in this expansion. Meta is planning to establish 30 data centers, including 26 in the United States. Joel Kaplan, Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer, emphasized the need for a robust domestic supply chain to support this initiative. Addressing concerns about the U.S. falling behind in the AI race, Kaplan warned that failing to make the right investments and policy decisions could pose a significant risk. Among the large-scale projects under construction are Meta's Prometheus site in New Albany, Ohio, and the Hyperion facility in Louisiana. Both sites will integrate Corning's fiber-optic technology as part of the new agreement. Having weathered the ups and downs of the tech industry, Corning is well-prepared for potential market shifts. The company, which has a rich history dating back to the 1800s, has continually adapted to meet changing demands. With its diversification strategy and stable cash flow, Corning's leadership remains confident about navigating the current landscape. Weeks highlighted the advantages of fiber technology, noting that it offers a more energy-efficient solution for data transmission. The rise of AI data centers has increased demand for fiber, which is critical for efficient communications. Recently, Corning's optical communications revenue surged by 33% in the third quarter, driven by the rapid adoption of its innovative products tailored for AI applications. In an exciting development, Corning has patented a new type of fiber specifically designed for AI, named Contour, which allows for more efficient data transmission. This advancement is seen as essential as the need for higher capacity and speed in AI data processing grows. As both Corning and Meta prepare to release their fourth-quarter earnings reports, the industry watches closely to see how this collaboration shapes the future of AI infrastructure.
