
In a significant move to bolster its AI capabilities, Meta has announced a groundbreaking multiyear partnership with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), just days after committing to utilize millions of Nvidia's processors. This new agreement, disclosed on Tuesday, involves the deployment of up to 6 gigawatts of AMD's graphics processing units (GPUs) to power Meta's AI data centers, alongside AI-optimized central processing units (CPUs). The first shipments of AMD’s MI450 GPUs are set to arrive later this year as part of the Helios rack-scale server initiative. AMD's CEO, Lisa Su, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing that the partnership will deliver “high-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure optimized for Meta's workloads.” This development is crucial as Meta seeks to accelerate one of the largest AI deployments in the industry, positioning AMD at the forefront of the global AI buildout. Meta's recent earnings report highlighted a substantial commitment of up to $135 billion in capital expenditures for this year alone, as it aims to compete with major players like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company is planning to establish 30 data centers, with 26 located in the United States. For AMD, this partnership marks a pivotal opportunity to gain ground in the competitive AI chip market, where it currently lags behind Nvidia, which holds approximately 90% of the market share and boasts a staggering valuation of $4.66 trillion. In contrast, AMD's market value stands at $320 billion. Chip analyst Ben Bajarin noted that Meta's strategic position allows it to choose from various computing options, highlighting the industry's increasing demand for computational resources. While specific terms of the AMD agreement were not disclosed, estimates suggest it could be valued in the tens of billions over at least four years. Bajarin pointed out that a key differentiator of this deal is its focus on customized GPUs, a feature not currently indicated in Meta's arrangement with Nvidia. Additionally, AMD's Helios is seen as a formidable competitor to Nvidia's Grace Blackwell systems, which have seen surging demand since their launch. In October, OpenAI also secured a similar deal with AMD, further establishing AMD as a competitive alternative for AI giants and hyperscalers. As Nvidia prepares to report its quarterly earnings, analysts anticipate a remarkable 68% revenue growth compared to last year. Meanwhile, AMD recently announced a 34% increase in sales for the fourth quarter, reaching $10.27 billion. Historically, Meta has been a customer of both AMD and Nvidia, and there are reports suggesting ongoing discussions with Google regarding the potential deployment of the tech giant's tensor processing units in Meta's data centers by 2027.
