Meta is setting the stage for a groundbreaking initiative by creating a new applied AI engineering organization aimed at accelerating its journey toward superintelligence. This new division will be led by Maher Saba, a vice president at Reality Labs, which oversees the development of Meta's metaverse offerings and AI-enabled smart glasses. Notably, this team will report directly to Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth. According to insiders, the structure of the organization is designed to be highly efficient, with teams consisting of up to 50 individuals reporting to each manager. This approach is part of a broader strategy outlined by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who emphasized a shift towards elevating individual contributors and streamlining team structures during the company’s recent earnings call. The newly formed group will collaborate closely with Meta Superintelligence Labs, an initiative established last summer under the leadership of former Scale AI chief Alexandr Wang. Their primary focus will be on developing advanced AI models that can drive Meta's innovative capabilities. In an internal memo, Saba highlighted the importance of transforming capable AI models into industry leaders, emphasizing that success in this domain requires more than just researchers and computational power. The new organization is expected to have two primary teams: one will concentrate on creating user interfaces and internal tools, while the other will focus on supplying the necessary data to enhance AI performance. Recent advancements in reinforcement learning and post-training techniques have convinced Saba and his team that there is a substantial opportunity for Meta to strengthen its position in AI. As they embark on this ambitious project, the company aims to invest more heavily in these areas to accelerate development and innovation.
