Meta brings its short-form video feed of AI slop to Europe

Meta has announced the debut of Vibes, its innovative short-form video platform featuring AI-generated content, now available in Europe through the Meta AI app. This new offering resembles popular platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels but exclusively showcases videos created by artificial intelligence. The introduction of Vibes follows its initial launch in the United States just six weeks prior. Shortly after Meta's rollout, OpenAI unveiled Sora, a competing social media platform that also focuses on AI-generated video creation and sharing. With Vibes, users can not only create and share their own AI-generated videos but also enjoy a personalized feed filled with content tailored to their interests. The platform allows creators to generate videos based on prompts or remix existing ones, incorporating unique visuals, music, and styles. Meta describes Vibes as a platform designed for social interaction and collaborative creativity, encouraging users to remix and co-create stories with friends. Videos can be shared directly within the Vibes feed, sent to friends, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels. However, the reception to this launch has been mixed. When CEO Mark Zuckerberg first introduced the concept, many users expressed skepticism. Comments on the announcement included remarks like "nobody wants this" and "Bro’s posting AI slop on his own app," reflecting a general reluctance toward AI-generated content on social media. Despite the backlash, Meta is emphasizing the success of its media generation efforts, claiming that usage within the Meta AI app has surged more than tenfold since its inception. This move comes in stark contrast to other platforms like YouTube, which are actively working to reduce low-quality AI content, often referred to as "AI slop." Meta's shift towards embracing AI content raises questions about its commitment to promoting authentic storytelling, a focus it had previously advocated for creators.
