Scale AI confirms ‘significant’ investment from Meta, says CEO Alexandr Wang is leaving

Scale AI, a prominent data-labeling firm, announced on Friday that it secured a substantial investment from Meta, which values the company at an impressive $29 billion. In a significant leadership change, co-founder and CEO Alexandr Wang will be stepping down to join Meta, where he will contribute to the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. Reports suggest that Meta's investment amounts to approximately $14.3 billion, granting the tech giant a 49% stake in Scale AI. This partnership aims to enhance the production of data crucial for training large language models, which are essential to the evolving landscape of generative AI. Meta confirmed the partnership in a statement, revealing, "We have finalized our strategic partnership and investment in Scale AI. This collaboration will allow us to expand our efforts in generating data for AI models, and Alexandr Wang will be joining Meta to assist with our superintelligence projects. Further details about this initiative and the talented individuals joining our team will be shared in the upcoming weeks." In the interim, Jason Droege, currently Scale's chief strategy officer, will assume the role of acting CEO. Scale AI has clarified that the funds from Meta's investment will be allocated to compensate investors and shareholders, while also supporting the company's growth. Importantly, Scale AI will maintain its independence, with Wang continuing to serve on the board as a director. As highlighted by industry insider Max Zeff, this investment is part of Meta's strategy to bolster its AI capabilities amid stiff competition from rivals like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Meta is currently striving to catch up as its own AI model developments lag behind those of its competitors. Furthermore, data from SingalFire indicates that Meta experienced a 4.3% loss of top talent to other AI organizations last year. In recent years, major AI labs, including OpenAI, have depended on Scale AI for high-quality data annotation. The company has ramped up its hiring efforts, seeking highly skilled professionals such as PhD scientists and senior software engineers to ensure the production of premium data for cutting-edge AI labs. Notably, Scale AI raised $1 billion in funding last year from investors, including Amazon and Meta, at a valuation of $13.8 billion.
