Meta ramps up AI infrastructure, commits $1.5 billion to build new data center

Meta has revealed plans to construct a massive data center in El Paso, Texas, aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence initiatives. This new facility, designed to have a capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW), will be the company's 29th data center. The El Paso data center will incorporate systems capable of accommodating both current traditional servers and the next generation of AI-driven hardware. Meta's investment in this project exceeds $1.5 billion, with expectations for completion by 2028. The facility will generate approximately 100 permanent jobs and employ around 1,800 construction workers during peak building phases. To date, Meta has invested over $10 billion in three data centers across Texas and employs more than 2,500 full-time staff in its data centers, offices, and research labs. Notably, the El Paso data center will operate on 100% renewable energy, and Meta is committed to replenishing 200% of the water it uses back into local watersheds. The choice of El Paso was influenced by its strong infrastructure and skilled labor force. Meta is intensifying its focus on AI, competing with industry leaders such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in the quest for superintelligence through advanced AI models. Earlier this year, Meta established a Superintelligence Labs and appointed Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, to lead it, along with the recruitment of top-tier talent from other firms. Additionally, the tech giant has earmarked $72 billion for capital expenditures this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized the importance of investing heavily in AI, asserting that the potential cost of missing out on superintelligence far outweighs the financial risks of overspending. Superintelligence, or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), represents a theoretical stage where AI systems could perform a wide range of tasks at levels equal to or surpassing human capabilities. As the race for this advancement continues, many AI labs are pouring substantial resources into building the necessary infrastructure.
