Meta rolls out Muse, a new AI image generator

Meta has officially launched its latest innovation, Muse Image, an AI-driven image generator developed by the company's dedicated AI division, Meta Superintelligence Labs. Initially referred to by the internal codename Mango, Muse will be accessible for free via the Meta AI app, as well as through Instagram Stories and WhatsApp. So, what capabilities does Muse offer? The features appear to align closely with those of other AI image generators, allowing users to produce whimsical and cartoon-inspired images. For individuals struggling with creative ideas, Muse includes a selection of “presets”—pre-designed prompts intended to inspire creativity. An illustrative video showcases various applications, including the creation of unique advertisements—an area where AI has increasingly made its mark in recent months—and experimenting with interior design concepts. In one example, a user employs Muse to visualize how a second-hand couch would look in their garage, a function that integrates seamlessly with Facebook Marketplace, Meta's platform for buying and selling used goods. Additionally, Muse boasts prompt-based image editing capabilities, enabling users to generate images tailored for sharing across Meta's suite of applications. Users can request images such as a personal picture set against a historical site, eliminate unwanted photobombers from snapshots, or even design a functional QR code through custom prompts. Alongside Muse, Meta is rolling out a suite of new AI effects for Instagram Stories, also powered by this innovative model. These effects feature an array of customizable filters to enhance existing photos. While the initial use of Muse is free for everyday activities, users may eventually need to subscribe to Meta's plans after reaching certain limits. Moreover, Meta has announced that Muse Video, likely an AI-based video generator, is already in the works. In the past year, Meta has introduced several AI applications, including Creator, an assistant, and Pocket, an app that facilitates coding for video games. While the company has faced scrutiny regarding its AI strategy, it remains committed to investing heavily in AI infrastructure as it continues to expand its offerings.
